Featured Dog of the Month!

Owen

Owen is a border collie/aussie mix with a medium coat. He was saved from a kill shelter and adopted in March 2008 as a baby. As events have changed, it seems his adoptive family now feels that he not the best fit for their family. Owen isn't welcoming of other dogs or strangers. He is loyal to his family and seems content as the only pet. Owen is a young healthy dog. He is very beautiful and simply needs a job to do where he can find his true calling in the world. He is not a bad or mean dog. He simply needs an owner with control and the ability to train him and care enough about him to be patient and willing to spend time with him to teach him proper ways to conduct himself. Owen is a smart breed of dog and simply wants to learn.
If you would like to meet Owen, please contact our facility.

All proceeds from the newsletter is used for the care of animals in our shelter while they await permanent adoption. If you would like information on how to subscribe, please contact Lagretta Nelson at lagrettas@comcast.net for more information.

NOAH'S ARC Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month. All members & visitors are welcome!
Meetings are held at the Noah's Arc Facility. If you wish to attend a meeting, please contact us for exact meeting location/directions. Meetings begin at 6:30pm.
2009 Meeting Schedule: July 6, August 3, September 7, October 5, November 2 and December 7.

Awareness: Solitary Confinement You see them in every community, a dog tied day after day to a porch, tree, or stake, lying lonely on a pad of bare, packed dirt. These dogs are dying for attention. Dogs are instinctively pack animals. Forcing a dog to live away from his or her human goes against the dogs most basic instinct. Dogs can offer people the gifts of steadfast devotion, abiding love and joyful companionship. Unless people accept these offerings and take the time to return them, it would be best not to get a dog. A sad, lonely, bewildered dog tied out back only suffers, and what sort of person wants to maintain suffering? (The American Humane Association)
NOAH’S ARC INC. absolutely restricts tying or chaining of any of our adoptable pets. If you drive by him and feel sick everyday, try to do something. Offer to organize a fence raising. Buy supplies, gather friends and put up a fence in an afternoon.

In the world of animal rescue, it's the older, and therefore "less desirable" pets that will break your heart the most. We see heart-breaking examples of the throw away mentality, in many cases because people think of pets as disposable possessions rather than companions with whom they are in a relationship. Even if there is a relationship, if it becomes inconvenient, many people elect to end it rather than work on a solution to whatever the problem might be.

While puppies & kittens have a fighting chance of being adopted because they are cute and irresistible, on any given day in any given shelter, many older adult dogs & cats will be hoping to have someone take them to a new home before it is too late. Since NOAH'S ARC is a "No-Kill" rescue; our animals will always be safe. However, we have many adult animals that have spent "years" in rescue. Some have never experienced life outside the confines of our facility. Others have had homes in the past, but have since been discarded. These pets truly become the "sad" majority. Can you help? Please consider one of our "long-term" residents for adoption or foster care.

Did you know that black dogs and cats are commonly the last, if at all, to be adopted? Destined for death in many shelters, black animals are passed by for whatever reasons; superstitions, negative labels, fear, or just too ordinary. The general public is likely not aware of how doomed black animals are when they are brought to the average animal shelter. Particularly, large black dogs and typical black cats have a very difficult time getting adopted and are euthanized at a staggering rate throughout the country. The sad truth is that they are overlooked in favor of lighter colored pets. There is absolutely no scientific evidence to support the position that color has any bearing whatsoever on temperament, health, or overall quality of any dog or cat, regardless of breed!
Today, and for years past, there are many homeless black dogs and cats in rescue care at Noah’s Arc Inc., that have never been considered for placement. People will call about and visit the other pets, but seldom the black ones. It is our hope to educate and promote adoptions for black pets. If you are thinking about adopting a dog or cat, please don’t overlook the black ones. They are every bit as wonderful as lighter-colored pets, and make loving and faithful companions!

"Neighbors Organizing Animal Health; Safety; And Responsible Care"

NOAH'S ARC is a nonprofit 501c (3), "NO-KILL", animal rescue organization founded in 1991, as an alternative to animal shelters. We have grown from 6 members to over 400 in and out of Tennessee. We are funded solely from donations and fundraisers with 100% of money raised going directly to improving the health and lives of rescued animals. Since 1991, we have placed over 4,000 rescue animals, (many with handicaps or special needs), into quality, loving homes. The purposes of Noah's Arc have expanded to encompass the rescue of abandoned, abused, injured or impaired animals; providing medical attention; finding foster or permanent homes for the animals; educating the local public regarding pet overpopulation; and providing low or no cost spaying/neutering of ARC animals and community pets. NOAH'S ARC animals are housed at our Dog Harbor and Cat Haven locations. Animals are also fostered in various homes in and around the Morristown, TN area. If you are interested in seeing any of our pets, appointments can be made with our adoption coordinator Susan Widener (423) 586-2293. Pets are shown by appointment only.
Please visit Our Adoptable Cats & Dogs link at the top of this page.

ADOPTING THAT "FOREVER" FRIEND

NOAH'S ARC has many wonderful dogs and cats in need of good homes. Our adoption donation for both dogs and cats is $50.00 per animal. This fee includes all current vaccinations and having each pet spayed/neutered. If a pet is not old enough at the time of adoption to have been spayed/neutered, we will follow-up and complete this service when the pet reaches the proper age. (All pets adopted from Noah's Arc must be spayed/neutered.) It is our goal to find safe, happy, loving homes for all our pets, and in order to do so we must evaluate each prospective home on an individual basis for approval. Adoption applications and contracts are required. Cats are adopted primarily to indoor homes. Dogs are required to be housed in safe areas; indoors, fenced yards, or pens. Noah's Arc dogs cannot be chained. We require a fenced yard for almost all dog adoptions. Occasional, RARE exceptions are made, but they are the exception. Please, respect our decisions regarding the needs of our pets. Adoption applications can be obtained by e-mailing rainingkatsndogz@yahoo.com or we can be contacted by leaving a phone message at (423) 586-2293.

YOU CAN HELP TOO!
COME GET INVOLVED!
WE CAN ALL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

NOAH'S ARC is always in need of new volunteers and good, safe foster homes for our pets. We house pets of all ages and sizes, many that are not listed on our website. Additional volunteers and foster care/homes are always needed. Our volunteers provide much of the human interaction the animals receive. Areas in which volunteers perform include; feeding, grooming, training, cleaning, seasonal tasks, public pet adoptions, fundraisers, and most important.... spending time with the animals in our care. Even if you can only volunteer a few hours per month, your time will be a huge contribution to those animals you visit and care for. Foster Care is another way of helping. If you can open your home or land to an animal that is in rescue, it has a great impact on their life. For many of our animals, foster homes become their only break from the confines of their pens at NOAH'S ARC. Even if you can only foster short term, it could make a tremendous difference in the life of a homeless pet. If you would like to give some love and attention to our animals by volunteering at our facility or fostering one of our pets while they are awaiting a permanent home, please contact Melissa Bowelle via e-mail at rainingkatsndogz@yahoo.com , or the NOAH'S ARC facility by phone at (423) 586-2293, and we will arrange for an interview.
Home checks are required for all Foster Homes.

Still want to help but can't foster or volunteer your time right now? Participating in our sponsorship program, donating money, pet items, or participating in fundraisers are other ways of helping.
Thank you for considering NOAH'S ARC!

COME VISIT OUR PETS!

"Meeting" a pet is the first step in "Loving" that pet!

We encourage visits from the public. Not only do the animals enjoy the company, but also visitation with our animals promotes community awareness of the number of homeless and unwanted pets we have in our area. Please call for an appointment to visit and meet any of our pets. Most of our dogs are located at the NOAH'S ARC Dog Harbor, and cats reside at the Cat Haven Facility. Special appointments can also be made to meet the animals that are in foster care. Most of our pets are fostered in the Morristown, and Jefferson City, TN areas. Our pets are looking forward to meeting YOU! Morristown is located approximately 25 miles northeast of Knoxville; TN. Exact directions will be given at the time an appointment is scheduled.
